(SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Oct. 27) – Junior goaltender
Jazmin Malinowski (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln-Way) was nothing short of a brick wall during the Arizona State Showcase as she notched her third straight shutout in the 5-0 victory over the showcase host Arizona State University on Saturday night.
The win puts the women's hockey team at 9-1 overall on the season and haven't allowed a goal since the game against the University of Colorado back on October 7.
The Bearcats didn't jump on the board until just past the midway point of the second period when sophomore
Dakota Peterson (Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada) recorded her tenth goal of the season with a power play goal off a rebound from junior
Nadia Studnicka (Chillicothe, IL/Home School). Just 46 seconds later, junior
Lara Wentz (Bismark, ND/) put away a loose puck in the crease to give McKendree a 2-0 lead. Sophomore
Callie Hoadley (Hanover, MA/Hanover High School) and junior
Alyssa Albee (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield Central) were credited with the assists.
Sophomore
Charleigh Wagner (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional Senior HS) extended the lead to three with the help from Studnicka. On the power play, junior
Natalia Taylor (Sooke, BC, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) sent a pass to freshman
Taylor Clarke (Victoria, BC, Canada/Belmont Secondary) who was open in front of the net and put it past the Sun Devil netminder. Continuing her hot weekend, sophomore
Paris Suzuki (Covina, CA/Covina High School) scored a power play goal on a backhand with under a minute left to go in the game. The Bearcats bested the Sun Devils by the score of 5-0 to close out the Arizona State Showcase.
Malinowski recorded 13 saves in her fourth consecutive shutout and fifth of the weekend. She shut out all three opponents the Bearcats faced this weekend.
"First of all, we have to thank Arizona State for putting on a great showcase that was first-class in every way. It was an honor for our ladies to take part in an event that helps young female players understand that they can pursue their passion for hockey all the way through college," said McKendree head coach
Derek Pallardy." I am proud of the way our players represented our program both on and off the ice this week. These ladies are playing so hard for each other, and really becoming a special group."
The women's hockey team will take a weekend off before returning to the ice November 9 in Chicago, Ill as they participate in the Robert Morris University Showcase opening against the host, Robert Morris University.
