(JEFFERSONVILLE, IN, Nov. 1) – The McKendree University men's soccer has reached the semifinal stage of the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Championship Tournament after defeating Illinois Springfield 3-0 this past Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats will square off against the Knights of Bellarmine University this Friday at Noon E.T. in Jeffersonville, IN. This is the first tournament bid in men's soccer program history after joining the league in 2012.
The Bearcats are seeded sixth in the GLVC tournament and are currently 11-5-1 overall and 8-4-1 in the GLVC. In the most recent NCAA regional poll, McKendree is ranked sixth in the Midwest and has the potential to increase their seeding as five of the top eight teams in the Midwest Region are from the GLVC, including fifth-ranked Bellarmine. Offensively, McKendree is led by sophomore midfielder
Eddie Davis (Arundel, England/Amersham College) with 18 points through 17 games, followed by forward
James Stone (Eastbourne, England/Bede's Senior School) with 11 points. Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper
Alvaro Cortazar (Asuncion, Paraguay/Santa Teresa de Jesus) has 42 saves through 16 games played and has continued to increase his single-season school record for shutouts with eight so far this year.
The Knights are seeded second in the GLVC Championship Tournament bracket and advance to the semifinals after defeating Quincy Univeristy 4-0 in the quarterfinals this past Sunday. Currently, Bellarmine holds an overall season record of 11-5-1.
