(BENSENVILLE, Ill., Nov. 10) – The McKendree University women's hockey team defeated the University of Massachusetts 6-1 on Saturday afternoon to move to 2-0 in the Robert Morris University Showcase.
The win puts the Bearcats at 11-1 overall, and pushes their win streak up to seven.
Sophomore
Dakota Peterson (Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada) got McKendree on the board first with her team-leading 11
th goal of the season. Juniors
Allison Sauvola (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) and
Natalia Taylor (Sooke, BC, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) were credited with the assists. The Bearcats would hold a 1-0 lead after the opening period.
The Minutemen would tie the game at one a piece early into the second period. Sophomore
Laurynn Davey (Owens Cross Roads, AL/Huntsville High School) would give the Bearcats back the lead with help from junior
Nadia Studnicka (Chillicothe, IL/Home School). After 40 minutes, McKendree would lead 2-1 over Massachusetts.
Junior
Lara Wentz (Bismark, ND/) extended the lead with a goal 41 seconds into the third period with passes from junior
Alyssa Albee (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield Central) and sophomore
Callie Hoadley (Hanover, MA/Hanover High School). Junior
Domenika Reusche (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty) put McKendree up three with help from Peterson and junior
Keisha Johnson (Clearwater, BC, Canada). Taylor notched her first goal of the game with one minute on the clock in the final period as sophomore
Paris Suzuki (Covina, CA/Covina High School) and freshman
Kayla Waldbillig (West Kelowna, BC, Canada/Mount Boucherie Secondary School) got the assists. Closing out the scoring was Studnicka who recorded an unassisted goal with under a minute to go in the game.
The Bearcats went on to defeat Massachusetts 6-1 in the game.
Freshman goaltender
Naomi Leasck (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh High School) recorded 30 saves in her effort between the pipes.
The women's hockey team will close out the Robert Morris University Showcase on Sunday morning against Lindenwood University-Belleville at 10:00a.m.
