(New York, NY., Nov. 16) – The McKendree University men's water polo team lost the first game of the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Championships on Friday night in the Bronx to George Washington University, 16-6.
With the loss, McKendree moves on to play Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. ET.
The Colonials jump ahead 2-0, but freshman
Adrian Maher (Keller, TX/Keller High School) would cut into the lead with a goal halfway through the opening period. Junior
Michael Krause (St. Louis, MO/Saint Louis University High School) would also net a goal as the Bearcats would trail 4-2 after the first eight minutes of play. Freshman
Brad Nelms (Lake Forest, CA/El Toro High School) scored the lone goal for McKendree in the second period and would trail 8-3 at halftime.
Freshman
Tony Sunagawa (Chino Hills, CA/Chino Hills High School) scored the first goal of the second half to cut the lead to 8-4. The Bearcats tried crawling back with goals from freshman
Aaron Jacobs (Houston, TX/Jersey Village High School) and
Matthew Haygood (Chino Hills, CA/Chino Hills High School) but the Colonials answered with five goals in the third period to lead 13-6 heading into the final period. The Bearcats couldn't find the back of the cage in the final period and fell 16-6 to George Washington University.
