McKendree Readies for Play at Quincy Holiday Classic

(LEBANON, Ill., Dec. 12)--
The McKendree University men's basketball team will return to the court this weekend following a week-long break for final exams to participate in the QU/Subway Holiday Classic hosted by Quincy University. The Bearcats will face Grand Valley State University Saturday afternoon before taking on Lincoln University on Sunday. Both contests will tip off at 1 p.m.

McKendree will bring a 4-4 overall record into this weekend's action. The Bearcats last played on Saturday in an 81-72 non-conference setback at East Central University. Nate Michael (St. Joseph, IL/St. Joseph-Ogden) pumped in 22 points to lead McKendree, while Logan Kohrmann (Bartelso, IL/Breese Central) chipped in with 18 points and five rebounds while Alijah Thomas (Des Moines, IA/Hoover) helped out with 10 points and three steals. Giovanni Offard (Freeport, IL/Freeport) contributed nine points, eight rebounds, three assists and a trio of steals for the Bearcats, who shot just 36.4 percent in the effort. 

Michael, who leads McKendree in scoring at 16.1 PPG, is eighth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in the same category. Michael is also third in the league in free throw percentage, hitting 85.7 percent of his tries from the foul line. Offard leads the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio and ranks eighth among all NCAA Division II players in the statistic. Thomas sits third in the GLVC in free throw percentage at 91.3 percent. 

Nolan Gerling (Germantown, IL/Mater Dei) joins Michael as the Bearcats' other double-digit scorer on the season at 10.4 PPG. In addition to leading McKendree with 40 assists, Offard paces the squad in rebounding at 5.5 RPG. Jacob Donaldson (Effingham, IL/Effingham) has blocked a team-leading eight shots in 2018-19. 

Following the weekend trip to Quincy, McKendree will have just one more game before the holiday break. The Bearcats will play host to Eureka College next Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 3 p.m. 

ABOUT GRAND VALLEY STATE
The Lakers are 7-2 on the season and 3-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Grand Valley State rolled to a 95-62 win in its last outing, which came on Saturday at home against Wayne State University in a GLIAC contest. 

Jake Van Tubbergen leads the Lakers in both scoring (16.3 PPG) and rebounding (6.9 RPG). Van Tubbergen is shooting 58.4 percent from the field. Hunter Hale is close behind at 16.1 PPG and has connected on a team-best 26 three-pointers in nine games. Hale is connecting at a 46.4-percent clip from beyond the arc. Jeremiah Ferguson is the third and final member of the Lakers' roster averaging in double figures at 15.2 PPG. Ferguson has also handed out 33 assists. 

Saturday's game will mark the first meeting in the Bearcats' NCAA Division II era against Grand Valley State. 

ABOUT LINCOLN
The Blue Tigers enter the weekend with a 5-3 overall record and a 1-1 mark in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) play. Lincoln battled its way to a 79-68 win on the road against Missouri Western State University. 

Four different players average in double figures for the Blue Tigers. Terrance Smith heads the quartet at 18 PPG. Smith is also the team's leading rebounder at 7.6 RPG. He is shooting just under 60 percent from the floor and nearly 87 percent from the charity stripe. Amariontez Ivory connects for 13.9 PPG and is a perfect 17-for-17 from the foul line through eight games. Jonell Burton (13 PPG) and Ni'Sean Rigmaiden (10.3 PPG) round out the list of top scorers for Lincoln. Rigmaiden has dished out 30 assists and collected 12 steals to pace the Blue Tigers. 

McKendree and Lincoln last met on the basketball court back on Nov. 22, 2016 at the Statham Center. The Blue Tigers registered a 90-81 victory in the contest. Nolan Gerling (Germantown, IL/Mater Dei) posted a double-double for the Bearcats with 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
