(KENOSHA, Wisc., Feb. 24) – The McKendree University women's water polo played two games at Carthage College on Saturday. The Bearcats earned their first Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity level victory over Carthage with a final score of 12-5. McKendree fell to Macalester College by a score of 9-6 in the second contest of the day.
The Bearcats move to 3-8 overall on the season, earning their first CWPA Varsity level victory.
McKendree defeated Carthage for the team's first Varsity level victory since the team's inaugural season last year. The Bearcats took a 3-2 lead after the first quarter, with goals coming from sophomore utility player Victoria Jones, senior attacker Sabrina Sherrin, and sophomore attacker Brianna Mullalley. Freshman attacker Emily Westlove broke out for three goals in the second quarter, along with another marker from Mullalley to put McKendree ahead 7-3 at halftime.
Westlove and Sherrin each notched goals in the third quarter, as the Bearcats held the Reds to just one goal. McKendree held Carthage to just one goal in the fourth quarter as well, as Westlove scored twice and junior attacker Jillian Hoffman netted one to seal the Bearcats victory. McKendree took home the 12-5 victory on Saturday against Carthage.
Macalester grabbed a victory over McKendree in the second game of the day for the Bearcats. The Scots were able to score twice in the first quarter while holding McKendree off of the scoreboard to hold a 2-0 lead after the first quarter. Westlove notched the only goal of the second quarter for McKendree, with Macalester scoring twice to hold a 4-1 lead at halftime.
Mullalley and sophomore center defender Tiana Wilson each found the back of the net in the third quarter, but the Scots were able to score two as well. At the end of the third quarter Macalester led 6-3 over McKendree. Each team netted three goals in the final quarter, with Mullalley scoring twice for the Bearcats and Westlove adding one of her own. McKendree fell short of the victory, falling 9-6 to Macalester College.
Westlove and Mullalley led the Bearcats in scoring in the two games. Westlove notched eight goals and Mullalley was able to net five to help give the Bearcats their first CWPA Varsity level victory.
