Women's Water Polo Falls in Final Contests of the Bruno Classic

(Providence, R.I., Feb. 4) - The McKendree Unversity women's water polo team fell to Wagner College 19-4, Bucknell University 15-4, and to Hartwick College 21-12, at the Bruno Classic hosted by Brown University. 
 
The Bearcats fall to 2-7 overall on the season with the losses at the Bruno Classic. 
 
Wagner jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter taking an 8-2 lead over the Bearcats after the first eight minutes of play. Sophomore attacker Brianna Mullalley and freshman defender Samantha McGowan each netted a goal for the Bearcats in the first quarter. The Seahawks extended their lead to 12-2 in the second quarter. McKendree netted two more goals in the third quarter from Mullalley and freshman defender Emily Westlove, but the Bearcats trailed 15-4 after three quarters. Wagner added four goals in the final quarter, while holding the Bearcats off the scoreboard to take a 19-4 victory on Saturday morning. 
 
McKendree took on Bucknell University on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. EST. Bucknell took a 4-1 lead after the first quarter, with senior attacker Sabrina Sherrin scoring the lone goal of the quarter for McKendree. The Bison added three more goals in the second quarter, with McKendree's only goal coming from Westlove. Sherrin scored the lone goal of the third quarter for McKendree, as Bucknell added for more to hold an 11-3 lead after three quarters. The Bison added four more goals in the final quarter, with Mckendree scoring one from the arm of sophomore attacker Valerie Sorondo. The Bearcats fell 15-4 to Bucknell on Saturday evening. 
 
The Bearcats went head-to-head against Hartwick College on Sunday afternoon falling 21-12. The Bearcats trailed 5-2 after the first quarter with Mullalley and Westlove each netting a goal. McKendree came out strong in the second quarter firing in seven goals to tie the game before halftime. Westlove scored three in the quarter, Mullalley netted two, and Sherrin netted two goals. Heading into halftime the teams were knotted up at nine a side. Sophomore utility player Victoria Jones and Mullalley scored for McKendree in the third quarter, but the Hawks added four goals in the quarter to hold a 13-11 lead. Hartwick came out strong in the final quarter scoring eight goals, and only allowing one goal from freshman attacker Alaina Johnson.
 
 
McKendree is back in action on February 24-25 for three contests at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis.
