(ST. CHARLES, Mo., April 11)—Playing its second non-conference road game in less than 24 hours, the McKendree University baseball team was defeated Wednesday afternoon at Lindenwood University, 14-4.
The host Lions rode the strength of a seven-run outburst in the second inning to victory. The loss gives McKendree a season record of 6-22. The Bearcats will host the University of Illinois Springfield for a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series, with the first doubleheader scheduled to take place Saturday at noon.
Junior outfielder Corey Chambliss and junior infielder Adam Cox each posted two hits to lead the Bearcats' 11-hit attack at Lindenwood. Junior outfielder Drew Reich scored twice in the outing for McKendree.
After Lindenwood (17-18) scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead, McKendree cut its deficit in half in the top of the second. Reich singled up the middle to open the frame before stealing second base. He then came around to score on a Lions' error to bring the Bearcats within 2-1. Lindenwood then sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second, scoring seven times to stretch its advantage to 9-1. The Lions then plated two more runs in the fourth for an 11-1 lead.
McKendree erupted for three runs in the sixth innings to rally within 11-4. The Bearcats loaded the bases thanks to a walk by Reich and consecutive singles from freshman catcher Austin Francis and Chambliss. Junior infielder Drake Hampton came up as a pinch-hitter and delivered an RBI single to score Reich with the first run of the frame.
Cox later added a run-scoring single before Chambliss scored on a fielder's choice to cap the outburst. Lindenwood then put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and a final tally in the seventh.
