(Lebanon, Ill., April 12) – McKendree men's volleyball is the #6 seed in the upcoming Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association post-season tournament, and will take on the #3 seed Ball State Cardinals in the quarterfinal round this Saturday in Muncie, Indiana.
The Bearcats and Cardinals have met twice previously this season, with both teams prevailing at home. McKendree finished the 2018 regular season with an overall record of 11-14 and is 1-2 all-time in the MIVA tournament.
Outside hitter Nolan Rueter was named to the All-MIVA Second Team after leading the Bearcats with 257 total kills and averaging 1.83 digs per set, while opposite side hitter Jared Wilcox is averaging a team best 2.96 kills per set to go with 1.41 digs per set.
Middle hitter
Brendan Schmidt (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) earned First Team All-MIVA honors after putting down a team-leading 90 total blocks and averaging over two kills per set. Red-shirt Freshman Wyatt Dimke is second behind Schmidt in team blocking, having recorded 69 total.
#11 Ball State University Cardinals (17-11, 10-4 MIVA)
The Cardinals upset #7 Ohio State on Saturday to finish third in the MIVA standings. They lead the conference in digs per set, averaging 10.46 as a team and are third in blocking, averaging 2.30 per set.
Senior middle hitter Matt Walsh is eighth in the nation in blocking, averaging 1.18 blocks per set this season and he has recorded 232 kills for the Cardinals. Sophomore outside attacker Matt Szews leads Ball State in kills with 247 and has added a 1.59 digs per set average.
Senior outside hitter Mitch Weiler is averaging a team leading two digs per set, while sophomore setter Jake Romano leads the Cardinals in assists with an average of 8.87 per set to go along with 1.83 digs per set.
