McKendree Drops Two Contests to WWPA Opponents

(ERIE, Penn., April 14) – The McKendree University women's water polo team dropped two matches to Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) opponents Gannon University and Mercyhurst University on Saturday. The Bearcats fell 15-5 to the Golden Knights of Gannon, and 11-8 to the Lakers of Mercyhurst.


McKendree falls to 8-14 overall on the season with the losses. The Bearcats are back in action at the WWPA Championships hosted by the University of California – San Diego in La Jolla, Calif. on April 27-29.

 

GAME ONE

The Bearcats fell to Gannon in the first game by a final score of 15-5. McKendree took an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter on a goal by senior attacker Sabrina Sherrin. The Golden Knights came out strong in the second quarter scoring eight goals while holding the Bearcats off the board. At halftime Gannon led 8-1 over McKendree.

McKendree found the back of the net for three goals in the third quarter, with goals coming from freshman defender Samantha McGowan, and two from sophomore attacker Brianna Mullalley. Gannon added four goals in the quarter to hold a 12-4 lead over McKendree after three quarters. Freshman attacker Emily Westlove scored the Bearcats lone goal of the fourth quarter while the Golden Knights scored three times to grab the 15-5 victory.

 

GAME TWO

Mercyhurst grabbed an 11-8 victory over McKendree in the second contest of the day for the Bearcats. The Lakers took an early 3-1 lead over the Bearcats at the close of the first quarter, with McKendree's goal coming from the arm of senior attacker Jillian Hoffman. Mercyhurst added four goals in the second quarter while McKendree could score twice with the Bearcats goals coming from Sherrin and sophomore attacker Catie Young.

The teams played to a 1-1 draw in the third quarter with the Bearcats getting their goal from Sherrin. At the close of the third quarter Mercyhurst led 8-4 over McKendree. The Bearcats outscored the Lakers 4-3 in the final frame, but it wouldn't prove to be enough. Mullalley netted two goals, while Westlove and sophomore utility player Victoria Jones each found the back of the net once in the fourth quarter. At the final buzzer, Mercyhurst took an 11-8 victory over McKendree.

Mullalley led the Bearcats in scoring on the afternoon with two goals in each game for four total on the day. Westlove led the Bearcats in steals with eight, along with one goal in each matchup. Sherrin netted three goals on the day, with two goals in the second contest.
