McKendree Goes Deep Twice in Home Loss to Missouri S&T

(LEBANON, Ill., April 18)—The McKendree University baseball team was defeated Wednesday afternoon at home by Missouri S&T in non-conference action at Hypes Field, 11-5.

The Bearcats rapped out 10 hits and nearly overcame a six-run deficit before the visiting Miners were able to hold on for the win. McKendree moves to 6-27 overall and will head east this weekend for a Great Lakes Valley Conference series at the University of Indianapolis. The Bearcats and Greyhounds will square off in doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday beginning each day at noon ET.

Junior outfielder Corey Chambliss led the Bearcats' 10-hit attack against Missouri S&T with three hits, including a double. Junior first baseman Andrew Aydt and freshman catcher Austin Francis each hit a home run on Wednesday as Francis and junior outfielder Drew Reich each delivered two hits for the Bearcats.

Missouri S&T (17-18) scored single runs in the second and third innings before McKendree cut the lead in half in the fourth. Chambliss led off with a double before Reich singled to put runners at the corners. Aydt then grounded out to short to score Chambliss with the Bearcats' first run of the contest. After the Miners added three runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead 5-1, Francis belted a leadoff home run over the right-center field fence to lead off the bottom of the fifth to help the Bearcats get within 5-2.

For the second inning in a row, Missouri S&T scored three times to stretch its advantage to 8-2 when McKendree looked to rally. Reich led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and scored five pitches later when Aydt blasted his team-leading fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot to right, to get the Bearcats within 8-4.

McKendree then loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh before junior infielder Matt Klosterman raced home on a passed ball to trim the deficit to 8-5. The Bearcats got the tying run to the plate in the frame but could not cash in. Missouri S&T then pulled away by scoring three times in the top of the eighth to account for the final margin.

Five different McKendree pitchers saw action on the mound on Wednesday. Freshman right-hander Andrew Yancik, who drew the start against Missouri S&T, struck out four batters in three innings of work.
