(LEBANON, Ill., April 19)--The McKendree University baseball team will be on the road this weekend for a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series at the University of Indianapolis. The Bearcats and Greyhounds are slated to tangle Saturday and Sunday, with first pitch for each doubleheader set for noon ET each day.
McKendree will be looking to gain some footing in the GLVC standings heading into the final three weeks of conference play. The Bearcats are currently 6-27 overall and 1-10 in GLVC action. McKendree hosted Missouri S&T in non-conference play on Wednesday, and the host Miners pulled away late for an 11-5 victory. Corey Chambliss had three of the Bearcats' 10 hits in the contest, while Austin Francis and Andrew Aydt each hit home runs in the contest.Â
Aydt has taken over the team lead with five home runs and 21 RBI, while Matt Klosterman paces McKendree with a .331 batting average. Klosterman also leads the Bearcats with 40 hits, 19 runs scored and seven stolen bases.Â
Following the series against UIndy, McKendree will return home for a non-conference tilt against Lindenwood University. The Bearcats will then visit the University of Southern Indiana next weekend before closing out the 2018 regular season at home with six games.Â
ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS
The Greyhounds are 21-14 on the year with just a 3-9 ledger in conference play. Indianapolis has won four of its last five outings, including a non-conference doubleheader sweep on Thursday against Lake Erie College.Â
Storm Joop, one of the top players in the GLVC, leads the Greyhounds with a .347 batting average. Joop also has a team-best 12 doubles and has been hit by a pitch 11 times already. Dylan Jones paces UIndy with seven home runs and 31 RBI.
On the mound, Jake Sprinkle and Michael Schalasky each have four victories this season. Sprinkle is 4-3 with a 4.47 ERA in nine starts for UIndy and has a team-high 51 strikeouts. Dylan Stutsman has nailed down a team-leading six saves for the Greyhounds.
Indianapolis won three of the four games played between the two teams last season at Hypes Field, but the Bearcats' lone victory over the Greyhounds was a memorable one. McKendree set the program's Division II-era record for runs scored in a 28-5 rout of UIndy in the final game of last year's four-game set. The Bearcats also had the most hits for a McKendree team (27) since joining NCAA Division II in time for the 2013 campaign. The Bearcats plated 11 runs in the first inning and followed up with eight more in the second inning.Â
