(LA JOLLA, Calif., April 28) – The McKendree University women's water polo team fell to No. 4 seed Fresno Pacific by a score of 15-7 at the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships on Saturday.
The Bearcats entered the WWPA Championships as the No. 8 seed with a regular season record of 8-14, and 0-4 in the WWPA. McKendree fell to the top seeded UCSD in game one of the WWPA Championships. The Bearcats will battle for seventh place on Sunday at 8 a.m. CT against the loser between No. 3 Mercyhurst and No. 7 Gannon.
McKendree fell behind 4-2 after the first quarter with goals coming from sophomore attacker Brianna Mullalley and senior attacker Sabrina Sherrin. The Bearcats found the back of the net two more times in the second quarter on shots from Mullalley and freshman attacker Emily Westlove, however, Fresno Pacific scored five to hold a 9-4 lead at halftime.
The Bearcats were held off the scoreboard in the third quarter as the Sunbirds scored three. Each team traded three goals a side in the final quarter with two of McKendree's goals coming from freshman defender Samantha McGowan, and one from sophomore attacker Catie Young. At the final buzzer, the Bearcats were defeated by a final score of 15-7.
