(LEBANON, Ill., April 5)--The McKendree University baseball team is prepared to take on both Mother Nature and Oakland City University when the Mighty Oaks come to Hypes Field for a non-conference doublehader on Saturday. First pitch (weather permitting) is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Due to unusually long winter weather conditions experienced in the Midwest combined with last week's rain, McKendree has been able to play just three home contests at Hypes Field. The Bearcats were slated to host Lewis University in a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series last Friday and Saturday, but the contests were moved to Whitey Herzog Field in Belleville due to wet playing conditions. McKendree and Lewis played just three of the games before the fourth was cancelled because of last Saturday's steady rain. The Bearcats also had Tuesday's non-conference home twinbill with Rockhurst University postponed to May 1.
McKendree enters the weekend at 5-19 overall. The Bearcats have won one of their three true home games at Hypes Field in 2018, which was a 7-6 triumph over current GLVC West Division leader Drury University back on March 14. McKendree is also 1-6 in GLVC play this season.
Four regulars in the Bearcats' lineup are hitting over .300, including Matt Klosterman with a team-leading .372 average. Klosterman still ranks among the GLVC's top 10 in average. Levi Brening is next at .329 to go along with his team-leading totals of eight doubles, four homers and 20 RBI. Blake Gray (.310) and Andrew Aydt (.304) round out the list of hitters above .300 for the Bearcats.
Jack Strieker has taken over the team lead in strikeouts on the mound for McKendree with 23. Nick Yung is second with 21. Brening leads the Bearcat hurlers with a 1.59 ERA over his three starts in 2018.
Following the scheduled games with Oakland City, McKendree will visit Southeast Missouri State University for a Tuesday night contest at 6 p.m. The Bearcats will also be on the road Wednesday at Lindenwood University before returning to Hypes Field to host the No. 10-ranked University of Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars in the four-game conference series April 14-15.
