(Lebanon, Ill., Sep 16) – The McKendree University men's soccer team improved to 4-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play after defeating Lewis University Sunday afternoon 3-0.
In 90 minutes of play, the Bearcats out shot the Flyers nine to two and stayed clean on the card sheet, whereas Lewis amassed two yellow cards and one red card. The Bearcats began their scoring just six minutes into the game when
Jett Gay (Springfield, IL/Glenwood High School) crossed a ball that
Gonzalo Correa (Santiago, Chile/Athletic Study Center) was able was able to head into the net to make the score 1-0. McKendree struck again in the first half after
Eddie Davis (Arundel, England/Amersham College) sent a masterful through ball to
Blake Williams (Belleville, IL/Belleville West High School), who in turn extended the lead to 2-0. The third and final goal came in the 53
rd minute courtesy of a
James Stone (Eastbourne, England/Bede's Senior School) assist to
Luke Schlichting (Perryville, MO/Perryville High School). Goalkeeper
Alvaro Cortazar (Asuncion, Paraguay/Santa Teresa de Jesus) recorded his second straight shutout and saved one shot.
The men's soccer team will be back in action at Leemon Field at September 21 at 7:30 p.m. as they return home to Leemon Field to face Bellarmine University in their third GLVC matchup.
