(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 30)--The McKendree University women's basketball team returns home this week for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference match-ups. The Bearcats will host the University of Indianapolis Thursday evening before Lewis University wraps up the brief two-game home stand for McKendree with a visit on Saturday afternoon. Both games will be carried live on the Bearcat Sports Network at
www.glvcsn.com/mckendree.
McKendree earned a split of its two road contests last week, defeating Quincy University in convincing fashion last Thursday before dropping a decision on Saturday at Truman State University. McKendree sits at 10-8 overall this season with a 4-5 mark in GLVC play. The Bearcats currently sit in sixth place in the latest GLVC Point Rating System, which determines the eight teams who will qualify for the GLVC Tournament March 7-10 in Edwardsville, Ill.
In its win at Quincy last week, McKendree turned in a stellar defensive effort, limiting the host Hawks to just 27.1 percent shooting on the night. That included a 16.7 percent clip in the first half as the Bearcats rolled out to a 28-12 halftime lead. McKendree scored the final 16 points of the first half, holding Quincy scoreless over the final eight minutes of the second quarter. The 44 points scored by Quincy marked a season-low for a McKendree opponent this season. It was also the fourth time in 2018-19 that the Bearcats held its opponent under the 50-point mark in a contest.
Three players continue to average in double figures for McKendree this season.
Sydney Diekhoff (Pekin, IL/Pekin Community) leads the way at 14.7 PPG, followed by
Jordan Heberg (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield North) and 11 PPG and
Megan Jensen (Union, MO/Saint Francis Borgia Regional) at 10.2 PPG. Diekhoff is second in the league in free throw percentage at 87.3 percent, while Jensen is second among all GLVC players in field goal percentage at 61.7 percent.
Jordan Morton (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) remains the conference's sixth-leading rebounder at 7.9 RPG, and
Callie Pohlman (Appleton, WI/Appleton North) is eighth in the conference in assists at 3.56 APG.
Following its games this week against Indianapolis and Lewis, McKendree will be on the road for the next two weeks before returning to the Statham Center on Saturday, Feb. 23 to face the University of Illinois Springfield. That contest will begin a three-game home stand to close out the 2018-19 regular season for the Bearcats.
