Scully, Wentz Guide Women’s Hockey to 5-1 Defeat of Colorado

(SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Oct. 20) – The McKendree University women's hockey team completed the Arizona State Showcase in style, completing the sweep of its competition. The Bearcats defeated the University of Colorado 5-1 on Sunday morning at Mediacom Ice Park.

McKendree pushes its win streak to three with a 5-4 overall record.

The Bearcats were excellent on special teams, scoring four times. McKendree scored three times on the power-play and once on the penalty kill.

Senior Lara Wentz (Bismark, ND/) kicked off the action five minutes into the first period with a power-play goal off assists from junior Callie Hoadley (Hanover, MA/Hanover High School) and freshman Tianna Walkus (Port Hardy, BC, Canada/Port Hardy Secondary School). The Bearcats scored on the power-play once again in the first period as Scully found the back of the net. Sophomore Kayla Waldbillig (West Kelowna, BC, Canada/Mount Boucherie Secondary School) and senior Delayne Ivanowski (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) were credited with assists.

The second period appeared no different than the first as McKendree pushed two more goals across. Wentz scored her second goal of the game, this time a short-handed goal with an assist from senior Alyssa Albee (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield Central). Five minutes later, Scully netted her second goal of the game, the only even strength goal of the game. Junior Laurynn Davey (Owens Cross Roads, AL/Huntsville High School) was given an assist on the goal. The Buffaloes scored their only goal of the game later in the period as McKendree carried a 4-1 lead into the final period of play.

Senior Jana Garrow (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny) scored the Bearcats third power-play goal of the game midway through the third period to seal the victory. Scully and Waldbillig were credited with the assists.

Sophomore goalie Naomi Leasck (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh High School) made 15/16 saves in the win.

The Bearcats will take a week off before returning to the rink on Nov. 1 against the University of Minnesota at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.
