LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 1) – The McKendree men's soccer team topped the Miners of Missouri S&T 1-0 this Friday evening, earning their 12
th straight win as well as the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) crown. The Bearcats are now 13-1-2 overall and 12-0-2 in GLVC play.
Prior to kickoff, McKendree seniors
Nyonbio Yorke (St. Louis, MO/Soldan International Studies),
Sam Liddington (Northampton, England/St. Charles Community College),
Javi Soto (Santiago, Chile), and
Matthew Moran (Perryville, MO/Perryville High School) were honored as they conclude their collegiate soccer careers after this season.
The first half held plenty of opportunities for the Bearcats, as they took a total of eight shots in the first 45 minutes, but it wouldn't be until the 80
th minute of play that they would capitalize on their chances. Senior
Javi Soto (Santiago, Chile) delivered a magnificent cross from the back corner to the head of junior forward
Rulo Arteaga (Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico), who tucked the ball into the top-left corner of the net, sending the Bearcat bench and stands into a frenzy. McKendree then survived the next 10 minutes of play and clinched a program-first GLVC Regular Season title. Redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Pachu Cortazar (Asuncion, Paraguay/Santa Teresa de Jesus) made three saves in his 7
th shutout of the season.
McKendree will be back on the pitch this Sunday November 3 as they conclude regular season play on Leemon Field against the Saints of Maryville University.
