(LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 21)--
The McKendree University baseball team will kick off the home portion of its 2019 schedule this weekend with a three-game series against Saginaw Valley State University. Due to wet grounds, the three-game series will take place on the turf field at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The Bearcats and Cardinals are scheduled to meet in single games Friday night at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon.

Both McKendree and Saginaw Valley State enter the series with 0-3 records on the young season. The Bearcats were swept down at the University of Alabama at Huntsville in their 2019 debut last weekend. Hayden Schaefer (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) had an impressive debut for McKendree, going 6-for-10 at the plate in the three-game set. He, along with Andrew Aydt (Wildwood, MO/Eureka), blasted home runs down in Alabama for the Bearcats. Aydt and Levi Brening (Coon Rapids, MN/DuQuoin) were each 3-for-8 at the dish last weekend for McKendree.

Brening also turned in a solid relief effort last weekend for the Bearcats. In 3 1/3 innings of the opener, Brening struck out a McKendree career-high five batters.

The games this weekend serve as the front end of a six-game home stand for McKendree. The Bearcats will take on Quincy University in a three-game, non-conference series next weekend. The Bearcats and Hawks will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 2, followed by a single game a day later.
