(LEBANON, Ill., March 1)--The McKendree University baseball team will make its Hypes Field debut this weekend with a three-game, non-conference series against Quincy University. The Bearcats and Hawks will tangle in a doubleheader Friday before wrapping up the weekend with a single game on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon both days. There will be a broadcast of Friday's twinbill on the Bearcat Sports Network at
www.glvcsn.com/mckendree. Live stats will be available for all three games of the weekend series.
McKendree enters the weekend with an overall record of 1-5. The Bearcats dropped two of three games last weekend to Saginaw Valley State University in a series contested in Edwardsville, Ill.
Hayden Schaefer (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) leads the McKendree offensive attack with a .467 batting average, while
Matt Klosterman (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) is hitting at a .368 clip and
Andrew Aydt (Wildwood, MO/Eureka) checks in at .353. Aydt and
Corey Chambliss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) share the early-season lead in runs batted in with four apiece.
Levi Brening (Coon Rapids, MN/DuQuoin) picked up the Bearcats' first mound victory of the season with a strong outing last Friday against Saginaw Valley State. Brening struck out eight batters over five innings of work in a 5-3 McKendree win.
Adam Bunnell (Salem, IL/Salem) pitched the final two innings of the Bearcats' win over SVSU to collect the save.
Following the weekend series with Quincy, McKendree will hit the road for four straight games, beginning with a Tuesday non-conference match-up at William Jewell College.
ABOUT QUINCY
The Hawks bring a 5-1 overall record to Lebanon. Quincy has won its last four games, including a three-game sweep last weekend in Ohio against Malone University.
Chandler Purcell leads the Hawks with a .346 batting average and is tied for the team lead with six RBI. Michael Nielsen is hitting .333 with a team-leading four doubles, while Nolan Snyder is hitting at a .316 clip with three triples and six runs batted in.
On the mound, Riley Martin has a 2-0 record with a 0.75 earned-run average. In 12 innings of work, Martin has allowed just one earned run. Sam Stephens and Nick Stroud share the team lead in strikeouts with nine.
Quincy won three games in a four-game series last year with McKendree in Quincy, Ill. The Bearcats took the final contest 4-2 in 10 innings.
