(LEBANON, Ill., Mar.13) – The McKendree University softball team picked up one win and one loss as they split with the Gorillas of Pitt State Wednesday afternoon, winning game one 8-5 and falling in game two 10-4.
In game one, the Bearcats jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning where
Shelby Summer (Washington, IL/Washington),
Caitlyn Lowry (St. Louis, MO/Notre Dame) and
Jenny Homann (Freeburg, IL/Freeburg High School) scored off RBIs from
Miranda Gajewski (Kronenwetter, WI/D.C. Everest) and
Konnor Arrowood (Fulton, MO/South Callaway). McKendree would continue dominating the score sheet, scoring five total runs through the second and fifth inning while holding the Gorillas scoreless. Pitt State attempted to comeback in the sixth and seventh innings by adding four runs, but it was not enough and the Bearcats came out with the victory.
Game two saw McKendree and Pitt State tied at 3 for the majority of the game, however the Gorillas marched out to a 6-3 lead through four and a half innings. The Bearcats answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of a double from Gajewski that sent Lowry home, but Pitt State would add four more runs in the sixth and seventh inning resulting in a 10-4 loss for McKendree.
The Bearcats are now 13-11 on the season, and will return to the diamond Saturday, March 16 as they travel to Evansville, Indiana to open up Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play for the 2019 season in a doubleheader against the University of Southern Indiana.
