(LEBANON, Ill., March 14)--The McKendree University baseball team will play host to the University of Indianapolis for a three-game, Great Lakes Valley Conference series this weekend. The Bearcats and Greyhounds will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon before wrapping up the series with a single contest on Sunday at noon. All three games of the series will be carried live on the Bearcat Sports Network at
www.glvcsn.com/mckendree.
McKendree enters the weekend with a 4-10 overall record. The Bearcats were defeated in two of three games to kick off their GLVC slate last weekend at Bellarmine University. McKendree grabbed a 4-3 victory in the middle game of the series and held a late lead in the finale before the Knights rallied to win the contest by a 5-3 score. On Tuesday, the Bearcats returned to Hypes Field and split a non-conference twinbill with William Jewell. After the Cardinals took the opener, 7-4, McKendree broke out the bats to collect a 6-1 win in game two. The Bearcats belted a season-high four home runs -- including three in the sixth inning -- of Tuesday's nightcap.
Bryce Emery (Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg) is hitting a team-best .455 entering the Indianapolis series.
Hayden Schaefer (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) is the only other starter batting above the .300 mark at .368.
Andrew Aydt (Wildwood, MO/Eureka) and
Drew Reich (Charlestown, IN/Charlestown) share the team lead in round-trippers with three each. Reich hit homers in each end of Tuesday's doubleheader against William Jewell. Aydt has driven in 10 runs and has draw 10 walks to pace the Bearcats.
On the mound,
Ryan Vogt (Ava, IL/Trico) is the only McKendree hurler to start four games to this point of the 2019 season.
Connor Gilles (High Ridge, MO/Rockwood Summit) -- who allowed just one run and struck out a career-high six batters in five innings of work in the nightcap against the Cardinals -- and
Levi Brening (Coon Rapids, MN/DuQuoin) are each 1-1 on the season. Brening tops the squad with 19 strikeouts while Vogt is close behind with 17.
Following the Indianapolis series, McKendree will be on the road for five straight contests, beginning with a GLVC doubleheader on Wednesday at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
