(LOUISVILLE, Ken., Mar. 17) – The McKendree University softball team was swept by the Knights of Bellarmine University Sunday afternoon, falling in game one 3-0 and coming up just short of a comeback in a 4-3 game two. The Bearcats are now 13-15 on the season.
Bellarmine took the lead in game one during the first inning on a sacrifice fly that put them up 1-0. Both teams battled back and forth for the rest of the game until the Knights sent a two-run homer over the backfield fence, securing their 3-0 victory over the Bearcats. Sophomore
Miranda Gajewski (Kronenwetter, WI/D.C. Everest) went 2-2 at the plate in the Game one loss.
In game two McKendree held the lead first, sending two runs home in the top of the third inning. Bellarmine answered one and a half innings later, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth and claiming a 3-2 lead for themselves. Samantha Cameron (Dix, Ill./Centralia, Ill.) walk sent
Aspyn Taylor (Clinton, IL/St. Joseph Ogden High School) home. After stranding three runners on base, Bellarmine recaptured the lead once more on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth,and survived the top of the seventh by leaving two Bearcats on base.
Abbie Bailey (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) finished game two 2-3 at the plate, earning one RBI.
Up next, McKendree will travel to the Prairie Stars of Illinois Springfield on Saturday, March 23 in another GLVC doubleheader.
