(ROMEOVILLE, Ill., March 31)—The McKendree University baseball team was defeated in both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Sunday at Lewis University. The Flyers notched an 8-0 victory in the opener before pulling away late to complete the sweep in a 6-0 triumph.
McKendree slips to 9-16 overall and 6-8 in the GLVC with its two losses on Sunday. The Bearcats will look to take the final game of the weather-delayed series on Monday, with first pitch set for noon.
The Flyers' pitching staff held the McKendree offense in check on Sunday. The Bearcats registered just six hits on the day, including four in the opener. Freshman
Hayden Schaefer (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) was the lone McKendree player to collect a hit in each contest.
Lewis (11-14, 6-8 GLVC) scored single runs in each of the first two innings of game one to build an early 2-0 lead. The Flyers added runs in the fourth and sixth innings before plating three runs in the seventh to push its cushion to seven runs. Lewis then added a run in the eighth to close out the scoring in the opener.
Senior right-hander
Levi Brening (Coon Rapids, MN/DuQuoin) was nicked with the loss for McKendree, allowing four earned runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings of work.
Sunday's nightcap was scoreless until the third inning, when Lewis scored to grab a 1-0 lead. The Flyers tacked on a run in the sixth before breaking the game open with four more runs in the seventh inning.
Junior right-hander
Jared Timmerman (New Baden, IL/Wesclin)n registered a quality start for the Bearcats, giving up just two earned runs while scattering nine hits over six innings. Timmermann did not walk a batter and struck out one in his 87-pitch outing.
