McKendree Closes Out Three-Game Series at Lewis with 12-2 Setback

(LEBANON, Ill., April 1)—The McKendree University baseball team wrapped up its three-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series Monday afternoon at Lewis University with a 12-2 loss to the host Flyers.

Lewis jumped out to a 7-1 lead after four innings of play on its way to completing the weekend sweep of the Bearcats. McKendree is now 9-17 on the year and 6-9 in GLVC play. The Bearcats will return to Hypes Field Wednesday to host the University of Southern Indiana in a conference twinbill scheduled for a noon start.

Senior infielder Adam Cox (Louisville, IL/North Clay) and junior outfielder Jordan Richardson (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) each had a hit and a run scored in Monday's contest for McKendree. Freshman Nick Beeler (Troy, IL/Triad) reached base twice for the Bearcats with a single and a walk, while junior infielder Bryce Emery (Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg) and sophomore catcher Connor McCormick (Manteno, IL/Manteno) also had hits on the day for McKendree.

After Lewis (12-14, 7-8 GLVC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings of play, McKendree broke through with a run in the top of the fourth. Cox led off the frame with a pinch-hit double and came around to score when senior first baseman Andrew Aydt (Wildwood, MO/Eureka) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing the Bearcats within 4-1. The Flyers answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to push its advantage to 7-1.

McKendree scored its final run of the contest in the top of the sixth inning. Richardson started the two-out rally with a single. Aydt and Beeler were then walked to load the bases before Richardson raced home on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to 7-2. Lewis then scored five runs over its final two at-bats to close out the win.

Sophomore right-hander Andrew Yancik (Glen Carbon, IL/Edwardsville) allowed four earned runs over four innings in taking the mound loss for the Bearcats.
