(LEBANON, Ill., April 21)—The McKendree University baseball team closed out its three-game weekend series against Missouri S&T with a 6-2 loss to the Miners on Sunday at Hypes Field.
The Bearcats will now step out of conference for their next two games, beginning with a Tuesday night meeting against NCAA Division I Southeast Missouri State University. First pitch between the Bearcats and Redhawks is set for 6 p.m. in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Three McKendree players registered multiple hits on Sunday against Missouri S&T. Senior
Matt Klosterman (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) led the charge with three hits in the contest. Freshman infielder
Joseph Costanzo (Kansas City, MO/Rockhurst) added a pair of doubles, while senior first baseman
Andrew Aydt (Wildwood, MO/Eureka) also delivered two hits for the Bearcats.
After Missouri S&T (25-13, 18-9 GLVC) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, McKendree answered with the game-tying tally in the bottom of the third. Costanzo doubled with one out, and Klosterman followed with a single to right field that moved Costanzo to third base. Junior infielder
Bryce Emery (Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg) then laid down a bunt single between the pitcher's mound and the first base line to score Costanzo with the Bearcats' first run of the day.
The Miners then took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth and another in the top of the sixth to build a 5-1 advantage. McKendree (9-31, 6-21 GLVC) then struck back with a run in the bottom of the sixth to get within 5-2. Junior outfielder
Jordan Richardson (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) led off the frame with a double off the center-field fence. A walk to senior outfielder
Corey Chambliss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) and a single by Aydt loaded the bases. Richardson then raced home on a double-play ground out to trim the Bearcats' deficit to three runs.
Senior right-hander
Ryan Moore (Evansville, IN/Central) scattered five hits and allowed two earned runs over 4 1/3 innings in making the Sunday start for McKendree. Moore fanned four batters in the outing.
