(O'FALLON, Ill., April 7) – The McKendree University women's water polo team captured Senior Day victories on Sunday with a 14-7 win over Monmouth College and a 12-3 triumph against Carthage College. On the weekend, the Bearcats went 3-1 with the lone loss coming to Salem University on Saturday.
With one game remaining in the regular season, the Bearcats sit at 11-12 overall.
Game One
In the morning game, the Bearcats came out hot as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over the Fighting Scots. Freshman
Kaitlyn Moguel (Tujunga, CA/Crescenta Valley High School) scored the first goal before junior
Brianna Mullalley (Chula Vista, CA/Eastlake High School) netted consecutive goals. Moguel would add in her second goal of the period to put McKendree up 4-2 after the first period.
The second period saw another four Bearcat goals. Freshman
Danielle Borelli (Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach High School) and sophomore
Emily Westlove (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central High School) each notched their first goals of the game. Moguel and Mullalley each scored their third goals in the period as they carried an 8-4 lead into halftime.
Once again, McKendree put four balls in the back of the cage in the third period. Westlove netted three goals in the period to push her goal total to four. Freshman
Carley Manuel () contributed her first goal of the contest. McKendree led Monmouth 12-7 heading into the final period of play.
The McKendree defense held strong in the final period, allowing zero Monmouth goals. Sophomore
Alaina Johnson (Mason, OH/William Mason High School) added her first goal of the game while Westlove scored her fifth to push the Bearcats to a 14-7 victory over the Fighting Scots.
In the cage, freshman
Isabella Strimling () recorded 14 saves and two steals in the win.
Game Two
McKendree got ahead early and never looked back in the win over Carthage. The Bearcats led 4-0 after the opening period that saw Manuel, Moguel, Westlove, and freshman
Maddy Bolton (Alta Loma, CA/Los Osos High School) scored the goals.
The Bearcats dominated defensively in the first half, allowing only a single Lady Red goal in the second period. Freshman
Abigail Burton (Chino, CA/Chino High School) put back to back balls in the back of the net to extend the McKendree lead. Bolton added her second goal to put the lead at 7-1 heading into halftime.
Three different Bearcats scored in the third period that saw no Carthage goals. Manuel recorded
her second of the game while Burton got her third and Borelli scored her first. McKendree held
an 11-1 lead going into the final period of play.
Senior
Tiana Wilson (Orange County, CA/Mt. San Antonio College) scored the lone goal for the Bearcats in the fourth period en route to a 12
win over the Lady Reds from Carthage College.
Splitting time in the cage, Strimling recorded two saves and junior
Kim Fay (Lake Oswego, OR) made six saves.
The women's water polo team will close out the regular season on April 20 as they travel to
Bloomington, Indiana for a single match against Indiana University.
