Bearcats Fall in Doubleheader Contest at Rogers State

(CLAREMORE, Okla., Feb. 21) – The McKendree University baseball team dropped the first two games of a four game series to Rogers State University in Claremore, Okla. The Bearcats fell in the first game, 4-2 and then dropped the second game, 7-5.

McKendree got on the board first with a single run in the first inning but the lead was short lived as the Hillcats went on to score two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. It wasn't till the sixth inning when the Bearcats scored again with Austin Francis (Dupo, IL/Dupo High School) crossing home plate off of a Hayden Schaefer (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon Township High School) single down the right field line to tie it up 2-2. Roger State answered back once again with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and then maintained the lead to win the first game 4-2.

The Bearcats recorded four hits in the first game and two RBIs. Jared Timmerman (New Baden, IL/Wesclin High School) and Cade Berendt (Germantown, WI/Germantown High School) were on the mound for McKendree in game one. Timmerman threw for 93 pitches and two strikeouts. Berendt came in to close out the game throwing just ten pitches.

In the second game, the Bearcats once again took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning. Rogers State scored one run in the bottom of the second to tie the game up 1-1. McKendree experienced an explosive fifth inning, scoring four runs to take a 5-1 lead. The Hillcats then scored two of their own in the bottom of the fifth and recorded their own four run inning in the bottom of the seventh to take back the lead and win the second game 7-5.

McKendree tallied more hits in the second game than Rogers State, 7-6. Ryan Hutchinson (Sorento,IL/Greenville High School) was the lone Bearcats to collect multiple hits on the day, earning two hits and one run. Schaefer was then the only Bearcat to record multiple RBIs with two in the second game and one hit. Bryce Emery (Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg High School) was able to cross the plate twice for McKendree to be the lone Bearcat to earn more than one run in the second game.

The four Bearcat pitchers in the second game threw more strikeouts than Rogers State pitchers, 9-6. Brenden Boles (Odin, IL/Salem High School) started the game for McKendree collecting three strikeouts. Nick Beeler (Troy, IL/Triad High School) then took the mound recording two strikeouts of his own. Cameron Hibbets (Granite City, IL/Granite City High School) came out next for the Bearcats and Andrew Hoguet (Columbia, IL/Columbia High School) closed out the game for the Bearcats earning one strikeout of his own.

McKendree will close out the series against Rogers State tomorrow with a double header in Claremore, Okla. The first game is scheduled for noon with the second game following at 3 p.m.
