(LEBANON, Ill. – Jan. 2) – The McKendree University men's basketball team will open the 2021 calendar year by hosting the University of Indianapolis in a rescheduled event on Monday, Jan. 4 at 6:00 PM. The Bearcats will then travel to Springfield, MO for a mid-week evening competition against Drury on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 7:30 PM.
Chris Foster's team has a 3-2 overall record and are 3-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) competition heading into this week's games. The McKendree coming off a one-game win, after splitting a two-game weekend with Lewis on Dec. 18 and 19. In their 70-52 win, the Bearcats held the Flyers to a 20-point deficit, their greatest lead throughout the game, heading into halftime. The Bearcats are averaging 44.3 percent from the floor, 36.2 percent from three-point range, and 74.6 percent in free throws. They are allowing their competition to an average 74.4 points and lead with a 1.4 scoring margin.
Alijah Thomas (Des Moines, IA/Hoover) scored a season-high 20 points in his first game of the season and win against Lewis. Thomas was 60.0 percent from the floor and 87.5 percent from the free throw line.
Bryson Bultman (Nashville, IL/Nashville) matched his career-high 22 points in the win against Lewis. Bultman is averaging 18.8 points per game this season, and leading the Bearcats in three-point percentage (64.3 percent) and third on the team in field goal percentage (57.7 percent).
Brendon Gooch (Belleville, IL/Althoff ) sits atop the Bearcats leaderboard, with an average 13.0 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Gooch is third on the team in free throw attempts, going 20-for-23 (87.0 percent) in the first five games of this season.
About University of Indianapolis (UIndy)
UIndy ended the 2020 calendar year with a 0-3 overall and 0-3 GLVC competition record. In their third dropped contest, the Greyhounds fell 77-64 to Lewis on Dec. 15. The Greyhounds were down by 10 late in the first half, followed by a 15-0 point run by Lewis early in the second half. The Greyhounds sparked a 19-4 scoring run to get within six, but Lewis extended their lead back to double digits. The Greyhounds are averaging 37.8 percent from the paint and 31.1 percent from beyond the arc, with an average 5.3 points behind their opponent opponents in the scoring margin. UIndy will face Southern Indiana on Sunday, before heading to McKendree on Monday, Jan. 4 for a 6:00 PM tip-off time.

The Panthers sit at a 1-1 overall record and are 1-1 in GLVC competitions. The Panthers' last competition was a 90-84 win over Lindenwood on Dec. 20. Even with five players out, including three potential starters, due to injuries, the Panthers battled back in the second half of the game for their first win of the season. They held Lindenwood to 32 percent shooting and outscored their opponent 45-37 in the second half. The Panthers are averaging 52.8 percent from the paint and 34.2 percent from beyond the arc, with an average 0.5 points behind their opponents in the scoring margin. Drury will face Maryville on Sunday, Dec. 3 before their scheduled contest against McKendree on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 PM.
