LIBERTY, Mo. - McKendree University men's soccer wins third match in Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a five-goal victory. The Bearcats pushed their winning streak over the Cardinals to four matches with the win on Friday night.
McKendree quickly took a two goal lead by the 23rd minute in the match behind goals from junior defender
Cole Gerstenberger and sophomore midfielder
Magnus Buschmeier. The goals from both of the goals from Gerstenberger and Buschmeier were their first of the season. Gerstenberger's goal was assisted on by senior midfielder
Eddie Davis, his third of the season.
William Jewell took one back from the Bearcats in the first half during the 32nd minute, cutting the lead to one goal for the Bearcats. McKendree gathered once again to score a third time in the first half to take a two-goal lead into the intermission. The third goal of the match for McKendree came from senior midfielder
Diego Tapia-Fraites, his first score of the year. Tapia-Fraites' goal in the latter part of the first half earned the game-winner status as well.
Exiting the intermission period, the Bearcats held a 3-1 advantage over William Jewell but did not wait long to extend that advantage. Senior forward
James Stone struck less than one minute into the second half with a header goal via a pass from freshman midfielder
Philipp Schmidt. The goal from Stone was his sixth of the season (12 total points) while Schmidt owns three assists with the dish-out. The fifth and final Bearcat goal for the match came from junior forward
Tony Bodul in the 56th minute of action while being assisted on by senior forward
Gonzalo Correa.
The Cardinals scored one final time in the 65th minute but the Bearcats held the line through the remainder of the match, improving to 3-2-3 on the year.
NOTES:
McKendree won its fourth-straight match over William Jewell with the 5-2 victory.
McKendree out-shot the Cardinals 17 (12) to 8 (5) in the match and also earned one more corner kick, 4-3, in the full-time contest.

James Stone (Eastbourne, England) recorded his sixth goal of the year with 12 total points, both of which lead the Bearcats.
Four of the five goals scored against the Cardinals were the first of the season for those Bearcats. junior defender

Raul Arteaga each collected their first.
