KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - McKendree University men's soccer claimed its third-straight win and fourth-straight unbeaten match in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in double-overtime. The win over the Bulldogs marked four-straight wins for the Beacats versus Truman State.
Truman State scored first behind a goal in the 30th minute of the first half and held the 1-0 advantage for only ten minutes. In the 41st minute, sophomore midfielder
Fetiol Hyke fired the equalizer and his second goal of the fall, forcing the game to be knotted up at one goal a piece at the half. The shot by the sophomore was only one of three on-frame shots by McKendree in the first 45 minutes. The goal from Hyke was assisted by senior forward
Raul Arteaga, which was his second of the season.
The remainder of regulation time led to zero scores, forcing the match into overtime. In regulation, the Bearcats out-shot the Bulldogs 15-9, but McKendree was unable to capitalize within the second 45 minutes to take the win. The first overtime period featured only one shot total, which came from Truman State.
Senior forward
James Stone struck late, with only 17 seconds remaining in the second period of overtime, via a pass from senior midfielder
Eddie Davis, to claim the victory for the Bearcats. The goal from Stone was his seventh of the fall, which leads McKendree, and raised his point total to a team-leading 14. Davis' assist marked his fourth of the year and added to his point total which nows sits at six.
With the win over the conference-foe, the Bearcats improve to 4-2-1 in the GLVC with their last loss coming against UIndy on September 19th.
NOTES:
McKendree extended its winning streak over Truman State to four matches; the streak dates back to 2018. The Bearcats also own a three-game winning streak on the season and four-match unbeaten streak, dating back to September 19.
Senior forward
James Stone (Eastbourne, England) scored his seventh goal of the season and his second game-winning strike in the win. Stone leads the Bearcats with 14 points on the season.
Sophomore midfielder
Fetiol Hyke recorded his second goal of the season, which was the equalizer in the first half against the Bulldogs. His first goal of the year came against UIndy on September 19.
Senior midfielder
Eddie Davis dished out his team-leading fourth assist in the win. The pass led to the game-winner from Stone in the second overtime period.
Raul Arteaga dished out the assist to Hyke, who sent the equalizer past the Truman State keeper in the first half. It was Arteaga's second assist of the season.
McKendree men's soccer will be back in action on October 8 against Southwest Baptist at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Illinois at 7:30 P.M.
