Stiffler Collects Another Game-Winner, Women's Soccer Beats Jewell in OT

Stiffler nets two while Spotanski adds one in the extra-time win

LIBERTY, Mo. - McKendree University women's soccer added its sixth win of the year after a lengthened match with the Cardinal of William Jewell. Sophomore midfielder Anna Stiffler recorded a two goal effort, including the game-winner, while fellow sophomore midfielder Katie Spotanski added her third goal of the year.

The Cardinals struck in almost immediate fashion, scoring in the first minute via a strike inside the 18-yard box following a pin-point pass to split the Bearcat defense. The William Jewell lead lasted for 16 minutes prior to a McKendree strike to even the game. Stiffler, a native of O'Fallon, Missouri, sent her third shot of the season into the back of the net off a pass from senior forward Morgan Cervera. The goal by Stiffler tied her for the Bearcat lead in goals while the assist by Cervera was her first of the year. The final stretch of the first half kept the contest knotted at one goal each.

Seven minutes into the second half of action, the Cardinals nabbed the lead again behind an assisted goal. The match was evened by McKendree during the latter part of the half with a goal from Spotanski in the 69th minute via a penalty kick score. The final 21 minutes of action resulted in no scores, which led to another overtime finish for the Bearcats.

The sophomore Stiffler gathered the winning score for the second time this season in the closing minutes of the initial overtime period. Junior midfielder Allison Frederking gathered a long pass and made a move to dish the ball off to Stiffler, who quickly made a turn and fired the game-winning shot past the opposing keeper in the 98th minute.

McKendree had a major advantage in the match with 21 shots and 11 on goal while the Cardinals only got two shots off, scoring on both. The Bearcats earned 13 corners in the match, which set up the squad for many goal scoring opportunities. The Bearcats own an 11-0-2 record over the Cardinals in the all-time series following the win.
