O'FALLON, Ill. – McKendree University Men's Water Polo concluded its home tournament schedule here Sunday by posting a 12-7 victory over Mercyhurst University in a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference-West Division game on Senior Day at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex Pool.
With the win, McKendree improves to 8-6 overall and finishes undefeated in league play for the second straight season with a 4-0 league mark and earns the No. 1 seed in the MAWPC-West Region Tournament that is scheduled for Nov. 6-7 in Morgantown, W.Va., while Mercyhurst fell to 0-15 overall and 0-5 in MAWPC-West Division play.
Prior to Sunday's game, the Bearcats honored their eight departing seniors in a pregame ceremony. The eight senior this season are attacker
Josh Carlson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West), utility player
Matthew Haygood (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills), defender
Pedro Osorio (San Bernardino, Calif./Riverside City College), utility player
Uros Pelemis (Belgrade, Serbia/Fresno Pacific), utility player
Michael Rojas (Cali, Colombia/Salem University), goalkeeper
Ori Scanlon (Orlando, Fla./Olympia), center
Andrew Serrano (Riverside, Calif./Riverside City College) and utility player
Jackson Spencer (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West).
The seniors combined to score 11 of McKendree's 12 goals in the game as Spencer led the way with three goals, including two in the third period. In addition to Spencer, Rojas and Osorio each had two goals, while Serrano, Carlson Haygood and Pelemis each had a goal. The lone goal not scored by a departing senior came from senior
Tony Sunagawa (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills).
Mercyhurst got into the scoring column first as Mathieu Davis scored a goal just a little over two minutes into the game, but Osorio would tie the game up on his first goal of the game about 30 seconds later.
After being tied at 1-all after the first period, the Bearcats would find their groove offensively in the second period as they scored five goals and held the Lakers without a goal to hold a 6-1 lead after two periods.
In the second period, Haygood gave the Bearcats a 2-1 lead just 90 seconds into the period and then Sunagawa's goal with 4:59 left gave McKendree a 3-1 lead. Serrano, Carlson and Pelemis would close out the scoring in the second period.
The Bearcats lead eventually reached 8-1 after goals by Osorio and Spencer in the opening two minutes of the third period. The Lakers, though, would close out the period by scoring three of the final four goals to drop McKendree's lead to 9-4 after three periods of play.
Rojas scored McK's first goal of the fourth period to push its lead to 10-4, but Mercyhurst would battle back and score three straight goals to pull within 10-7 with three minutes remaining in the game. That would be as close as the Lakers would get as about 15 seconds after Mercyhurst's Nicholas Miller made it 10-7, Rojas tallied his second goal of the game to make it 11-7 in favor of the Bearcats and Spencer capped the scoring on a goal with 51 seconds remaining.
Scanlon was strong in goal for the Bearcats as he played a majority of the game and allowed seven goals and made six saves, including four saves in the third period. Sophomore
Jimmy Cronin (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) played at the end of the game and recorded a save.
Davis paced the Lakers with three goals, while goalkeeper Tony Golin made six saves and allowed 12 goals in the game.
The Bearcats will next be in action on Oct. 23 as they travel to Erie, Pa., to compete in the College Water Polo Association Division II Championships.
