O'FALLON, Ill. - McKendree University men's water polo concluded the first day of its four game home weekend schedule here at McKendree Metro Rec Plex with wins over Augustana College and Gannon (Pa.) University on Saturday.
With the two wins McKendree went 3-0 on the day and improved their record to 7-6 on the season and improved to 3-0 in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference-West Division. McKendree opened play on Saturday with a 14-6 win over Salem (W.Va.) University.
In its 16-4 win over Augustana, graduate student utility player Uros Pelemis (Belgrade, Serbia/Fresno Pacific) and senior utility player Matthew Haygood (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills) each had four goals apiece, while Pelemis added two assists in the win.
Senior attacker Nico Rodriguez (Bogota, Colombia/Oviedo) added three goals and two assists against the Vikings, while senior attacker Josh Carlson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West), freshman utility player Torin Ferguson (Haleiwa, Hawaii/Lakeridge), senior center Tristen Clue (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills), fifth year senior center Andrew Serrano (Riverside, Calif./Martin Lutheran King), and sophomore center Adam Serrano (Riverside, Calif./Poly) all had one goal apiece.
Fifth year senior goalkeeper Ori Scanlon (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) made seven saves in goal against Augustana and did not allow a goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Jimmy Cronin (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) allowed four goals while making five saves against Augustana.
In the nightcap against Gannon, a game McKendree won 11-8, Pelemis led the way with four goals. Haygood added two goals and three assists. Rodriguez and Clue also scored a goal. Senior attacker Tony Sunagawa (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills), senior utility player Jackson Spencer (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) and fifth year senior defender Pedro Osorio (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon) all had one goal apiece.
Scanlon added six saves and an assist against Gannon, while allowing eight goals against the Golden Knights.
The Bearcats will return to action at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex on Sunday, Oct. 10 against Mercyhurst University at 10:30 am.
