KENOSHA, Wis. – The No. 2 ranked McKendree University women's bowling finished second out of 16 teams here Sunday afternoon at the MOTIV Ladyjack Hammer Classic hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University and held at Sheridan Lanes.
After going 9-0 on the first two days of the event, the Bearcats were seeded No. 1 in Sunday's championship bracket and they would open with 4-3 loss to No. 1 ranked and No. 2 seeded Nebraska, before earning a 4-0 win over No. 3 seeded and No. 4 ranked Vanderbilt in the second round and then fell 4-0 in the championship match to Nebraska. For the event, McKendree posted a 10-2 overall record and recorded a total pinfall of 13,767 as they averaged 211.8 in 65 total games.
Along with finishing as the tournament runners-up to the defending national champion Huskers, the Bearcats placed both junior
Maranda Pattison (Redwood Valley, Calif./Ukiah Independent) and junior
Rebecca Hagerman (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) on the All-Tournament Team after they placed third and fourth overall in the individual standings as Pattison recorded a total of 1,120 pins and averaged 224 per game, while Hagerman recorded a total of 1,086 pins and averaged 217.20 per game. SFA's Carlene Beyer was the individual champion as she recorded a total of 1,141 pins in the five traditional games and averaged 228.2 per game.
In Friday's five Baker matches, the Bearcats went 5-0 and then went 4-0 in Saturday's traditional matches as among their wins were victories were against both No. 1 ranked Nebraska (998-954) and No. 4 ranked Vanderbilt (1,131-1,068).
On Sunday, the Bearcats opened bracket play (best of seven) with a 4-3 loss to Nebraska. Against the Huskers, McKendree open the first round match with a 218-175 win in the first game, before falling 259-227 in the second game. The Bearcats would win the next two games to take a 3-1 lead in the match as McKendree won the third game (238-209) and the fourth game (214-210). NU rebounded to win the next two games, 216-178 and 213-189 to tie the match at 3-all. In the final game against the Huskers, the Bearcats fell to NU, 247-226 to give the Huskers a spot in the championship match.
With the loss to Nebraska, McKendree would meet No. 3 seeded Vanderbilt in the second round. The Bearcats swept all four games against Vandy to earn a rematch in the championship match against Nebraska. Against Vanderbilt, McKendree won the first game, 262-225, the second game, 242-173, the third game, 266-264 and 242-228 in the fourth game.
The win over Vanderbilt, who won win the third place match over No. 4 seeded Arkansas State, set up a championship rematch with Nebraska. The championship match belonged to the Huskers as they won the first game, 246-201, before earning a 194-187 win in the second game and a 217-174 win in the third game. NU would secure the title following a 205-160 win in the fourth game.
In addition to Pattison and Hagerman's third and fourth place finishes in the individual standings, senior
Hope Gramly (Prosper, Texas/Prosper) was eighth with a pinfall total of 1,066 and averaged 213.20 per game, while graduate student
Cassidy Courey (Brooklyn Center, Minn./Mount Mercy) was 48th with a pinfall of 832 and averaged 208 per game), and fifth-year senior
Isabella Correa Sarmiento (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Leonistico La Merced) was 52nd with a pinfall of 790 for an average of 197.50 per game.
The Bearcats will return to the lanes on Nov. 27-28 as they host the McKendree Match Games at the St. Clair Bowling Center in Fairview Heights, Ill.
