KENOSHA, Wis. - McKendree University men's wrestling closed out the one-day Jim Koch Wisconsin Open on Saturday evening with two top-three finishers in the tournament. Two wrestlers collected second place finishes in the tournament to lead the Bearcats.
157-lb Class:
Senior
Jose Champagne was one of the Bearcat's two second place finishers in the weekend tournament, going 3-1 enroute to the placement. The Griffith, Indiana-native opened up his tournament with a victory by fall over Michael Peters, of GLVC-foe Maryville, at the 1:04 mark. In his next match, the senior then collected another win by fall (8:26) over Purdue's Brennan Doyle. Champagne won the semifinal matchup with Ben Durocher (UW-Parkside) via a 4-3 decision. The first-place contest was dropped by Champagne by tech fall, moving into second place for the weekend 157-bracket.
165-lb Class:
Redshirt freshman
Cory Peterson added another second place finish for McKendree in his weight class, going 3-1 in the tournament. Peterson, a product of De Smet Jseuit, nabbed a pair of major decisions with wins over Michael Smith of Minnesota State (14-6) and Maryville's Luke Ebers (18-6). Peterson then earned his was into the first place match but dropped the match to Gatnz of UW-Parkside, earning second place.
