The McKendree University softball team extends its win streak to seven games after a doubleheader sweep of the William Jewell Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at Bearcat Field.
Â
McKendree opened the doubleheader with a win in the first game 3-1 and finished off the sweep with a 2-1 victory.
Â
Game One
The Bearcats got out to a 3-0 lead through the first five innings courtesy of a Jenna Homann RBI single, a
Paige Hayden sacrifice fly, and a
Shelby Summer RBI double.
Caitlyn Lowry scored all three runs.
Â
William Jewell scored a run in the sixth inning, but strong pitching from
Ellie Quaethem would hold off the Cardinals.Â
Â
Quaethem pitched seven innings, gave up one earned run and four hits while striking out three batters. She is now 4-3 on the season.
Â
Game Two
In the series finale, the Cardinals jumped out to an early 1-0 in the opening inning. Both offenses were held in check until the fifth inning. Homann would come up big for the Bearcats with a two-run single scoring Lowry and
Bailey Merritt. Those two runs was all the Bearcats would need to secure the win and the sweep.
Â
Miranda Gajewski pitched all seven innings for the Bearcats giving up just three three hits and one earned run while striking out 10 batters. With the win her record improves to 6-2 on the season.
