Softball Sweeps UMSL On Senior Day To Finish Regular Season

The McKendree University softball team ends the regular season with a series sweep over the University of Missouri St. Louis on senior day at Bearcat Field.
 
The Bearcats won the first game 8-0 in a six-inning mercy rule and 3-0 in the second game.
 
With the wins, the Bearcats will finish the regular season with a 23-11 record and a 20-8 record in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. 
 
Game One
 
The Bearcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the game's first two innings starting with an Abby Behlmann 2 RBI double in the first inning and finishing with a Shelby Summer RBI single in the second inning.
 
Summer and Behlmann would each add another RBI in the fourth and sixth inning to secure the win for the Bearcats.
 
Starting on the mound was Ellie Quaethem. She pitched in five innings, gave up zero runs off six hits and struck out eight batters. Her record improves to 10-6 on the season.
 
Game Two
 
Caitlyn Lowry got the game started with a lead-off home run in the first inning. It was her third home run of the season and her 10th home run in her McKendree career.
 
The Bearcats would also add runs in the second inning off a Taylor Allen fielder's choice scoring Summer and a Kelsey Sachs RBI double scoring Summer.
 
Miranda Gajewski started on the mound for the Bearcats. She pitched in all seven innings, gave up zero runs off two hits and struck out a career high 12 batters. Her record improves to 11-4 on the season.

"We put two solid games together today. We jumped ahead offensively early, pitchers were working ahead, and our defense was pretty solid," head coach Ashley Fleming said. "It's nice to walk away with two wins on senior day for a group of players who have given so much to this program."
 
Next
 
The Bearcats will compete in the GLVC Tournament next weekend. The day, time, and opponent for next week's tournament game are to be determined and will be announced at a later date. The tournament will take place in East Peoria, Ill.
