LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University men's soccer travels to Evansville to take on conference-foe Southern Indiana on Sunday to kick off its Great Lakes valley Conference season.
The Bearcats will enter the match with an 0-0-2 record after its opening weekend on the road. McKendree played to a draw in both of its first matches with Ashland and Ohio Dominican. Senior midfielder
Eddie Davis has led the offensive charge of the Bearcats so far with three points behind one goal and one assist. Freshman midfielder
Philipp Schmidt fired a shot past the opposition to record his first collegiate goal against Ashland. Senior forward
James Stone also recorded one goal for the Bearcats in the match versus Ohio Dominican in Columbus.
Southern Indiana enters its first GLVC match with a 1-1-0 record, beating Davenport in overtime in its most recent outing. Schoenstein has been the Eagles top point-scorer this season behind one goal and one assist, three others, Miller, Rhodes, and Winkler, have recorded a goal while five more have dished out an assist.
These two programs last played in November of 2019 where McKendree beat the Screaming Eagles, 1-0 in the GLVC tournament. The Bearcats have not lost to the Screaming Eagles since September of 2018, as the teams played to a draw in the 2019 regular season match-up.
So far this year, the goal has been guarded by senior keeper
Alvaro Cortazar, who has played all 220 minutes for the Bearcats. Cortazar owns 10 saves and a goals allowed average of 1.23 through the first two matches of the season.
The first match of the GLVC slate for McKendree will take place at Strassweg Field on the campus of Sothern Indiana on Sunday, September 12 at noon.
