EVANSVILLE, Ind. - McKendree University men's soccer captured its first victory of the season in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opening match against Southern Indiana on Sunday afternoon.
The Bearcats played an aggressive offensive game against a stingy USI defense. McKendree out-shot its opposition 13-7, with seven of the shots on-frame. The possession advantage leaned heavily in favor of the Bearcats, 63 percent to 37 percent, as well as the corner kick total leaned with McKendree, 8-2.
McKendree's victory was earned in early in the second half of play behind a strike from senior forward
James Stone. The goal was Stone's second of the season and was assisted on by freshman midfielder
Philipp Schmidt and freshman forward
Findlay Cook. Stone leads the team in points now with four behind his two goals on the season. Schmidt and Cook both recorded their first career assist in the regulation win. It also marked Cook's first career point with the Bearcats.
With the win, McKendree claimed back-to-back wins over the Screaming Eagles. The last time the Bearcats lost to the Eagles was 2018.
NOTES:
McKendree earned its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon by beating GLVC-foe USI, 1-0, in regulation. The Bearcats played both of their first matches this season to a draw.
Senior
James Stone collected his second goal of the year in the match and served as the game-winner.
Freshman
Philipp Schmidt added his first career assist in the match during the score by Stone. He now owns one goal and one assist on the year.
Freshman
Findlay Cook recorded his first career point in the match with an assist on the goal by Stone as well.

McKendree men's soccer will be back in action on Friday, September 17 in Romeoville against Lewis. The Bearcats will then finally make their home debut on September 19th against the nationally-ranked UIndy.
