ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - McKendree University men's soccer dropped a thrilling double-overtime match to the Flyers after senior forward
James Stone tied the contest in the closing seconds of regulation.
The Bearcats played a tough match at Lewis and needed a late goal to push the game past regulation. Stone fired a shot past the Flyers' keeper to the upper 90 to tie the match in the final minute of the second half. The first 60 minutes of the contest led to little action but the Flyers broke the stalemate in the 67th with a strike, putting them up 1-0. The Bearcats sent a total of eight shots at the Flyers with three on-frame. Four McKendree players fired at least one shot at the opposing keeper. Bearcat goalkeeper
Alvaro Cortazar collected five saves in the match but Lewis' offensive presence was constant throughout. The Flyers fired 15 total shots with seven being on goal while recording an assist on both of the goals.Â
Stone was the offensive leader for McKendree as he recorded five shots with the equalizer coming in the final moments of regulation which kept the Bearcats alive. McKendree held the line well but Lewis got the final say with a game-winner in the closing seconds of the second overtime period.Â
McKendree drops to 1-1-2 in the 2021 season and is 1-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
NOTES:
The loss is McKendree's first loss to the Flyers since 2017, snapping a three-match winning streak.
