Men's Soccer Scores Twice in Final 45, Unable to Hold Lead

Stone nets fifth of fall, Correa scores his first of the season

LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University men's soccer finished with its third draw of the season on Friday evening after it took the lead in the latter half of the second period but was unsuccessful in holding off an aggressive Quincy attack in the closing minutes.

The Bearcats went to 1-2-3- with the draw and now own a 1-2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference record in the young season. McKendree was down one goal early on after a quick mistake led to a Hawks score in minute two of the match but little else happened offensively for either team in the following 45 minutes. The stalemate after the first goal by Quincy was broken via a strike from senior forward James Stone in the 48th, who added his fifth goal of the year and tied the match at one goal each. McKendree successfully stole the lead back in the 70th minute from Quincy after senior forward Gonzalo Correa headed a long ball from junior midfielder Karson Huels backwards into the net. It was Correa's first goal of the season and was nearly the game-winner.

The final 20 minutes of action became a delicate balance for the Bearcats, where they attempted to hold the ball and still push into the Hawks defending zones. McKendree was successfuly until the closing minutes of regulation where an unfortunate handball call went against a Bearcat in the 18-yard box, causing a penalty kick to be awarded to the Hawks. The Hawks took the PK in stride, firing it into the lower right corner, evening the contest up at two goals each.

McKendree and Quincy played a extremely equal match with 16 shots each and the only major difference being total corners where the Bearcats earned eight to the Hawks' four.

NOTES:
The all-time series for the Bearcats against the Hawks goes to 2-9-3, with the Hawks still in control.

Senior forward James Stone (Eastbourne, England) scored his fifth goal this fall, leading McKendree with 10 points so far.

Senior midfielder Eddie Davis (Arundel, England) dished out his second assist of the year. He owns four points on the year, which is good for second on McKendree.

Senior forward Gonzalo Correa (Santiago, Chile) netted his first goal this fall behind a long pass from Karson Huels, which he headed backwards past the opposing keeper to take the lead in the 70th minute.
