LEBANON, Ill. - The McKendree University men's soccer team concluded its three-match homestand here Sunday afternoon by posting a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the University of Illinois-Springfield in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Leemon Field.
With the win, McKendree improved to 2-2-3 overall and 2-2-1 in the GLVC, while UIS fell to 5-3-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the league.Â
In Sunday's match, the Bearcats were outshot 13-5, including 9-3 in the second half and UIS held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks, but couldn't put a shot into the goal against McKendree's graduate student goalkeeper

The Bearcats lone goal of the match came in the 66th minute as senior forward
Gonzalo Correa (Santiago, Chile/Athletic Study Center) found the goal off an assist from sophomore defender
Matteo Schubert (Salzburg, Austria/BORG Reid). The goal by Correa was his second of the season. That goal by Correa was just the fourth shot of the game for the Bearcats.
Following Correa's goal, the Prairie Stars put a shot on goal in the 70th minutes. by Diego Alcaraz that was saved by Cortazar and in the 76th minute, UIS had another scoring chance, but a shot on goal by Lars Brinkman was saved by Cortazar.
Five different Bearcats took shots in the game, while UIS was paced by two shots each from Alcaraz, Conal Gallagher and Brian Riordan.Â
In the first half, UIS took four shots to two for McKendree and the Prairie Stars had three corner kicks to one for McKendree.Â
The Prairie Stars also held a 53 percent to 47 percent edge in possession for the match.Â
Cortazar (2-2-3) picked up the win in goal for the Bearcats as he didn't allow a goal and recorded three saves. The shutout was the second for Cortazar.Â
Pijus Petkevicius (5-3-0) took the loss in net for UIS as he allowed one goal and had three saves.Â
Both teams committed nine fouls in the game.Â
McKendree will return to action next Friday, Oct. 1 as they travel to Liberty, Mo., for a 7:30 p.m. match at William Jewell College.Â
