INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - No.5 McKendree University men's wrestling junior
Joshua Jones captured not only a win over the top-ranked 174lb wrestler this past week but collected his
first career Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) weekly honor, as announced by the league office on Tuesday morning. Jones owns a 12-5 record on the year and marks the Bearcats second GLVC weekly award winner on the season. No.5 McKendree went 2-0 this past week with a win against two GLVC foes in William Jewell (1/30, 42-6) and No.7 UIndy (1/26, 18-14).
Jones, a native of Chicago Heights, Illinois, went 1-0 on the week with a decision win (4-1) against conference foe and top-ranked 174-pound wrestler, Andrew Sims of Indianapolis. The win over Sims came in a tightly contested match between the No.5 Bearcats and the No.7 Greyhounds but served the the tying dual matchup and knotted the top-10 dual up at 12 team points each. In the 174 matchup overall, Sams owned a 1-0 advantage in the first two period and five minutes but Jones fought back with four points in the final two minutes, including a takedown to close out the period, pushing his lead to 4-1 over the top-ranked Greyhounds' wrestler.
The win in the match for Jones moved momentum back to the fifth-ranked Bearcats, allowing for two more wins in the final three dual matchups by the 184 (
Daniel Filipek) and the heavyweight (
Ian Kuehl) wrestlers. The No.5 Bearcats came away with an 18-14 win over the seventh-ranked UIndy Greyhounds, which marked an eighth-straight win for McKendree.
