LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University men's volleyball fell in four sets to No. 10 Ball State on Saturday night at the Melvin Price Convocation Center. With the loss the Bearcats fall to 4-4 and 1-1 in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association while Ball State improves to 8-1 and 2-0 in the MIVA.
The Cardinal won set one 25-20, the second set went to the Cardinals 25-21, the Bearcats took set three 25-22, and Ball State closed out the match with a 25-19 set four win.
Ball State hit .302 for the match while McKendree only hit .177 including a -.107 in set four. The Cardinals also recorded seven serve aces compared to the Bearcats two. Ball State also recorded 14.5 total team blocks and McKendree had six total team blocks.
Offensively, the Bearcats were led by graduate student outside hitter Ethan Carroll (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) as he had a team-high 18 kills. Graduate student outside hitter Patrick Ross (Anthem, Ariz./Boulder Creek) added 11 kills. Ross has recorded 10 or more kills in seven of the eight matches for the Bearcats this season. Carroll has recorded 10 or more kills in five of the eight matches this season.
Defensively, the Bearcats were led by senior libero Francisco Comas (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) as he recorded eight digs. Redshirt senior setter Ryan Serrano (Phoenix, Ariz./Boulder Creek) and Carroll both added seven digs a piece. Ross and freshman outside hitter Kevin Schuele (Aurora, Ill./Saint Francis) added six digs a piece.
The Cardinals were led by Kaleb Jenness had a game-high 19 kills and now has 144 kills on the season in the nine matches the Cardinals have played. Will Hippe added nine kills while Angelos Mandilaris added eight kills.
The Bearcats return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7 pm at the Pepsi Arena as the Bearcats take on the Quincy Hawks in MIVA play.
