ROSEMONT, Ill. – McKendree University softball closed out play here Saturday in the Midwest Regional Dome Invitational by suffering a 9-1 loss in six innings to Saginaw Valley State University at the Dome at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex
With the setback, the Bearcats fall to 4-6 on the season and posted a 1-5 record at the event, including three consecutive one-run losses to open play at the event hosted by Lewis University. Saginaw Valley improved to 3-2 with the win.
The Cardinals jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the first inning as they took advantage of Bearcat error and used a sacrifice fly to plate their first run off fifth-year senior

In the bottom of the first, the Bearcats tied the game on a one-out homer over the fence in left center from junior left fielder
Olivia Stansbury (Lafayette, Ind./Purdue Fort Wayne) off SVSU pitcher Emily Depew.
The Cardinals added three runs in the top of the second as they used two McKendree errors and three hits to plate three runs and take a 4-1 lead in the game. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run double off the bat of Leah Denome.
SVSU added a run in the top of the third thanks to a wild pitch from sophomore pitcher
Katie Nuetzel (Hereford, Ariz./Buena) to push in front 4-1.
Sara Moos made it 5-1 in favor of SVSU in the fourth inning on her RBI single to center.
Denome added another RBI in the top of the fifth on her single, which plated Blasia Moyler, who reached on a one-out triple to right center. Moyler's score made it 5-1 in favor of SVSU.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bearcats put runner on first and third with two outs, before graduate student first baseman
Paige Hayden (Independence, Mo./Fort Osage) grounded out to end the inning.
The Cardinals would plate two runs in the top of the sixth on a 2-run homer by Meagan VerVaecke off freshman
Sydney Bires (Carlinville, Ill./Gillespie).
Alyssa Muench would retire the Bearcats in order in the bottom of the sixth to seal the run-ruled win over the Bearcsts.
The Bearcats recorded just three hits in the loss as along with Stansbury, the other hits came from freshman shortstop
Heaven Lawrence (Marion, Ill../Marion) and junior catcher/centerfielder
Morgan Andrews (Creal Springs, Ill./Marion).
Moos, Denome and VerVaecke each had two for SVSU as they finished with 10 hits in the game.
Carter (0-1) took the loss in the circle for McKendree as she tossed two innings and allowed three hits and four runs (one earned run), while walking and striking out none.
Depew (2-1) picked up the win in the circle for SVSU as she went 4.1 innings and allowed two hits and one run, while walking three and fanning nine.
The Bearcats committed three errors in the game and the two teams combined to leave 11 runners on base as SVSU left six and the Bearcats left five.
McKendree will continue on the road next weekend as they a doubleheader on Saturday, March 5 in Joplin, Mo., against Missouri Southern at 2 and 4 p.m., before playing a doubleheader on Sunday, March 6 in Joplin, Mo., against Missouri Western State.
