Men's Soccer Shuts Down No.15 Lake Erie with 2-0 win

Hallsten, Strattman fire career-first goals in ranked win

COLUMBUS, Ohio - McKendree University men's soccer earned its first 2-0-0 start to a season during the Scott Gyllenborg head coaching era, defeating No.15 Lake Erie in a neutral site contest on Saturday afternoon, 2-0. The Bearcats started the year with a 2-0 win over weekend host Ohio Dominican on August 25 and then capped-off the opening trip with a win over the GMAC's top team in LEC. The two-win weekend saw three freshman score goals, forward Stephan Stuebbe, forward Dayton Strattman and midfielder Gabe Hallsten, while two clean sheets were recorded by sophomore Anthony Swenson in his first two collegiate starts.

McKendree broke the null score part way through the first half with a build-up attack where the freshman Hallsten collected a ball near the net and fired his first collegiate goal. The offensive build-up came to a head when sophomore midfielder Philipp Schmidt pushed the ball near the six-yard box and snuck it through to Hallsten. The assist was Schmidt's second in as many games. The goal came in minute 27 of the first half and put the Bearcats up 1-0 over the 15th-ranked Storm. McKendree worked in its offensive half for much of the first 45, amassing seven total shots and five corners.

The Bearcats held a 1-0 advantage heading into the second half and managed to maintain that lead through the second 45, adding an insurance score in the 74th minute of action. The freshman forward Strattman fired his first collegiate goal, which put McKendree up 2-0 in the No.15 Lake Erie Storm. The second goal followed a free kick by Schmidt, which was brought down by LEC but then stolen by Schmidt. The midfielder worked his way into the 18-yard box before dishing off a roller to Strattman, who loaded and shot a rocket past the keeper. McKendree held its 2-0 lead through the final whistle, gaining its second win of the year.

McKendree out-shot the Storm 10 to seven while tripling the LEC corners with six versus two.

The starting keeper Swenson now has two clean sheets in his first two collegiate starts, recording two saves against the Storm on Saturday afternoon.
