Women's Soccer Holds Off CSP, Mauch Tallies First of Season

Bearcats go 2-0 in Fayette to begin season

FAYETTE, Iowa - McKendree University women's soccer added another non-conference win to its 2022 resume with a 1-0 neutral site victory over Concordia St. Paul at Upper Iowa's Harms-Eischeid Stadium. The Bearcats improved to 2-0-0 on the fall with the win over the Golden Bears, just two days after defeating the host, UIU, on a count of 2-1. This was the first meeting between the Golden Bears and Bearcats.

The game began with ample opportunities for the Bearcats as they fired seven shots in the first 45 minutes of play with four corner kicks as well. McKendree broke open the game following a corner kick as a Golden Bears defender was called for a foul in the box at , resulting in a Bearcats penalty kick with junior midfielder Reagan Mauch taking the shot. Mauch fired her first score of the season with the PK opportunity and put her team ahead, 1-0, in the game in the 32nd minute. Her goal proved to be the game-winner when the final horn sounded. Mauch's day started much earlier as she put up the first shot of the day from either side just 22 seconds after kick off.

The neutral site game played out as a back-and-forth contest with both teams taking charge throughout the game, forcing defensive adjustments consistently. CSP earned more corners than the Bearcats, an unusual feat for opposing teams, as they applied pressure on the McKendree defending line through the duration of the afternoon. McKendree put out nine shots (six on-frame) on the day but managed just two in the second half while the Golden Bears sent four in the second 45 and seven total (two on-frame).

Seven players took a shot for McKendree as Mauch and junior forward Destiny Johnson led with two each, and senior midfielder Elizabeth Goldstein, junior forward Anna Stiffler, sophomore midfielder Lena Higgins, sophomore forward Gillian Nicholson, and freshman forward Karin Tebelius, each took one shot.

Senior keeper Abby Tucker held the net for full time in game two of the week, collecting her first clean sheet of the year, second win, and grabbed two saves against CSP.
