No.15 Women's Soccer Outlasts Flyers, Opens GLVC Slate with Win

Bearcats head to UIndy on Sunday

LEBANON, Ill. - 15th-ranked McKendree University women's soccer (5-0-1) began its Great Lakes Valley Conference slate with a win at Leemon Field on Friday evening, defeating the Lewis Flyers, 2-1, in full time. The Bearcats were led to victory via goals from junior midfielder Katie Spotanski (1) and junior forward Anna Stiffler (4). McKendree will be on the road for its next game at UIndy on Sunday, September 18.

The Bearcats fired seven shots in the first half, connecting on a free kick in the 41st minute with three Bearcats lining up to fire the ball. Spotanski, in her first appearance this season, fired the ball left of the keeper, hitting the back of the net to take the lead over the visiting Flyers. The goal marked the first by Spotanski this fall as she became the eighth goal-scorer for McKendree in the 2022 campaign.

Lewis returned to action in the second half with a score within two minutes of the kickoff, scoring in the 47th minute. The Flyers tied the game, 1-1, with the score.

The Bearcats continued to fire away in the second 45 minutes of action, putting up another seven shots. In the 67th minute of play, Stiffler connected on a ball that bounced by a Lewis defender near the six-yard box, firing it into the back of the net. The assist on the play went to redshirt senior defender Kathleen Kenny, as the goal followed her cross into the box. It marked Stiffler's fourth score of the fall and Kenny's first assist and point of the season.

The No.15 Bearcats held off the opposing attack for the remainder of the outing, claiming the victory over the Flyers.

McKendree put up 14 total shots with six on-frame while Lewis fired nine with two on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Abby Tucker held net for full time with one save. It marked Tucker's fifth outing in full time this fall while she improved to 5-0-1 in the net.
