Men's Soccer Earns Win over TSU With Martin's First Collegiate Score

Bearcats hold off Bulldogs to earn three points on Friday night

LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University men's soccer (4-2-3, 2-1-2 GLVC) took the first game of its weekend with a 2-1 win over Truman State behind sophomore James Martin's first collegiate score. The Bearcats improved to 2-1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while extending its unbeaten streak to four games. McKendree will face off against WIlliam Jewell on Sunday, looking for back-to-back wins for the second time this fall.

McKendree struggled to break through a physical and constant Truman State defense but fired the first goal in the eighth minute of the outing. Freshman midfielder Gabe Hallsten gathered a misplay by the Bulldogs keeper, firing the ball into the net for his second goal of the campaign. The Bearcats held a 1-0 advantage until the 24th minute of play when Truman fired a shot, narrowly passing the Bearcats defense.  The teams played out the remainder of the half knotted at one goal each.

In the 68th minute of the game, McKendree found itself with a flurry of offensive opportunities as sophomore midfielder Philipp Schmidt crossed a ball to Martin, who fired it past the Bulldogs' keeper for the game-winning score. It marked Schmidt's sixth assist of the year.

McKendree earned another three points in the GLVC standing with the victory.

Freshman Matt King started his second game in goal for McKendree, playing full-time with two saves in the outing.
